BISWANATH CHARIALI, Dec 24 – Three persons belonging to the Adivasi community died in police firing in Sonitpur district when they reportedly attacked the Dhekiajuli Police Station during a protest march here this morning even as tension in violence-affected areas grew with the death toll in the district mounting to 42.
Members of the Adivasi community broke into the police station campus with the bodies of those killed in Dhekiajuli, eventually leading to an altercation between the security forces and the protestors.
A few hours later, three persons from the Bodo community were hacked to death by miscreants of the Adivasi community near Behali.
A number of houses belonging to people from the Bodo community were also torched by the miscreants.
Members of the NDFB (S) on Tuesday unleashed a reign of terror killing 36 Adivasi people in remote areas of Sonitpur district on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The militants also triggered simultaneous attacks in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts in the BTAD.
Indefinite curfew was clamped in sensitive and affected areas of Sonitpur district with the official death toll in the carnage by NDFB (S) across the State mounting to at least 70.
The worst-hit Sonitpur district witnessed disturbing scenes throughout the day with police recovering 36 bullet-riddled bodies (killed by NDFB), mostly of children and women, from Dhekiajuli and Maitalu Basti areas.
Of the 30 bodies recovered from Maitalu Basti village under Tinisuti patrolling post, 15 were of children. Bodies of 11 women were also recovered.
The violence triggered by the NDFB(S) also left hundreds of villagers displaced. While some of them have been shifted to relief camps, many are reported to be still missing.
Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar told The Assam Tribune that so far 42 violence- related deaths have been confirmed which included 36 of those killed by NDFB(S) militants.
