Amid the ongoing chaos, the Hindus (who constitute 9 percent of 170 million Bangladeshi populace) organized two spectacular protest demonstrations in Dhaka and Chittagong. Waving the Bangladesh national flag, the protesters at Shahbagh intersection of Dhaka chanted various slogans including Joi Shri Ram, Hare Krishna, etc. It was the after-effect of nationwide arson, violence and targeted killing of religious minorities in Bangladesh during the last few weeks. Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad claimed that at least 205 incidents of communal violence and religious persecution had taken place in 52 districts, where hundreds were killed.
The agitating Hindus urged the interim government, formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure to India on 5 August, to immediately protect the religious minority communities in Bangladesh by deploying adequate security forces in the Hindu neighbourhoods, temples, businesses establishments, etc. They also demanded a fair probe into all kinds of violence against Hindus. Demands for a minority affairs ministry, a minority protection commission and 10 percent reservation of Parliamentary seats in Jatiya Sansad for the representatives of minority communities are also being placed in front of the caretaker government.
Days back, the London-based secular humanist Khalid Umar made a stunning comment- Divide Bangladesh into a Muslim and a Hindu part, because it’s the only way to protect Hindus in that country. He went on explaining that Bharat was partitioned (in 1947) claiming the impossibility of mutual peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Hindus. “Islam and Muslims are incompatible to live in peace among themselves let alone with any other nation or people on the planet. Many Muslims are claiming that they are protecting the Hindu temples in Bangladesh. He questioned them, why in Hindu nations, Hindus don’t need to form human chains to protect mosques? The global freedom of speech activist answered that Hindus don’t vandalize mosques and so they don’t need to pretend to be protectors of mosques.
Umar observed that all fake profiles were trying hard to put up a secular image of Bangladesh. Finally he urged the Bangladeshi Muslims to be grateful to India as the Indian armed forces liberated them from the persecution of the Pakistan army. The Indian army is the most ethical army in the world as their principles of war are derived from Kurukshetra. Moreover, India is not for a land grabber. Otherwise the Indian army entered Dhaka as victorious in 1971, but never adopted the expansionist design.
Meanwhile, Prof Yunus has condemned the attacks on minority communities in strongest words. The octogenarian banker turned social thinker also asked the young people to protect the Hindu, Buddhist and Christian families at the time of crisis. “They are my brothers, we fought together and we will stay together”, thus commented Prof Yunus, who is trying to motivate the young people to create a beautiful Bangladesh in their lifetime.
Nonetheless, the ousted PM’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy continued making controversial statements from abroad. Joy has made one after another outburst regarding the Bangladesh unrest. After his mother’s escape to India, Joy asserted that Hasina will never return to Bangladesh to join active politics. Later in a statement, Joy claimed that Hasina will return to Bangladesh to participate in the election, which should be conducted by the interim government within 90 days. Joy also denied a statement reportedly made by his mother that Washington was behind her ouster.
Bangladesh seems to unfold many stories in the coming days, where New Delhi has to adopt policies benefiting the Indians first!
