Guwahati: Assam Governor professor Jagdish Mukhi and State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma greeted people on the auspicious occasion of Holi, an ancient Hindu festival of colours marking the victory of good over evil, which is also known as Doulotsav and Phakua in Assam.
“I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to all on the auspicious occasion of Holi. May this festival bring peace, harmony, prosperity and happiness to all,” said Governor Mukhi in a statement adding that the colours of Holi reflect the State’s diversity and multi-cultural heritage. He hoped that the joyous spirit of Holi becomes a harbinger of happiness for all cutting across different castes, creeds and ethnicities.
CM Sarma said in a separate statement that the culture of India has an intrinsic relationship with the festivals. With the celebrations of Doulotsav, the spiritual and cultural life of Assam gets enriched. Celebrations of this festival over the centuries have been strengthening the bond of friendship and brotherhood among people belonging to different caste, creed and religion.
Earlier, Sarma released a book titled ‘Mrityunjay Bharat’ in a function organized by Alok Prabhanjan welfare society at Rabindra Bhawan in the city on Thursday evening. He termed the book, penned by Assamese social worker and intellectual Sankar Das, as a unique interpretation of many unexplored facets of the 5000 years old Indian civilization.
“This book should give the readers an opportunity to draw inspiration from the country’s past and will help them to identify a newer outlook. It will also significantly help the younger generation to analyse many known and unknown facts from a newer perspective,” said Sarma. Appreciating the author for penning down this timely and valuable book, Sarma urged the publication house to take steps for translating the book into different languages.
Sarma also felicitated five noted Assamese personalities namely Sudakshina Sarma, Jadav Payeng, Bhaben Ghimire, Paban Agarwalla and Ravi Choudhury in the function for their significant contributions to the society.
