Kolkata. In another shocking incident, a team of NIA officials on Saturday were attacked in East Medinipur district near Bhupatinagar where they had gone to investigate a 2022 blast case at a TMC leader’s house. The NIA officials reportedly faced the protests when they were trying to apprehend the accused.
It was reported that two of the NIA officials had been injured in the attack that took place during the wee hours at 5:30 am. The attack took place when the NIA team was trying to take two people related to their probe with them, following which the villagers surrounded the NIA vehicle and attacked the car.
As per media reports the mob also vandalised the car of the investigation agency personnel and bricks were pelted at the vehicle which led to damaging the windscreen.
In a video of the alleged incident that was widely shared on social media, locals were purportedly seen gathering around a vehicle, trying to stop the NIA team from taking the suspect along with them.
This is the second incident of attack on a Central agency team within three months. On January 5, an ED and their accompanying CAPF personnel were similarly attacked by a group of over 1,000 individuals while the team attempted a raid and search operation at the residence of suspended TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. As many as three ED officials were injured in the attack and had to be hospitalised.
NIA had earlier summoned some local TMC leaders including Bhupatinagar resident Balai Maiti and Monobrata Jana for interrogation related to the December 2022 blast.
After the duo ignored the summons for interrogation, NIA reached Bhupatinagar early Saturday morning and tried detaining them when a group of locals demanded their release.
