In an exclusive interview with Organiser, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat offered a deep and compelling reflection on why the Shakha model continues to be vital — even in today’s rapidly changing social and lifestyle landscape. He also shared insights on the growing reach of the Sangh in Vanavasi (Scheduled Tribe) areas.
Why Shakha Is Irreplaceable
“While the programmes in a shakha may evolve or have substitutes, its core essence — daily coming together, cultivating collective values, and renewing the resolve for Bharat Mata’s param vaibhav (supreme glory) — has no alternative,” Dr. Bhagwat emphasized. “This root idea of meeting, cooperating, and sharing purpose is what makes shakha irreplaceable.”
He highlighted that transformation at the individual level is only possible through a shared environment.
“A common man becomes extraordinary when connected to a collective mission. Ideals and emotional belonging are the real agents of transformation, not material conditions alone.”
The Role of Peer-Led Transformation
Dr. Bhagwat pointed out that while we revere great icons, people are shaped more directly by those around them.
“We follow our peers more than distant ideals. A capable friend is easier to emulate. That’s why shakha provides the best framework for building both individual and social character.”
He further noted that though the format — time, attire, activities — may adapt with time, the spiritual and social nucleus of the shakha remains untouched and vital. Even global observers are taking interest in studying the shakha model.
“We have explored possible alternatives six or seven times in the past decades. None have matched its impact.”
Empowering Vanavasi Communities
On the Sangh’s growing work in tribal areas, Dr. Bhagwat said:
“Our primary work began with service and empowerment of Janjatiya (Scheduled Tribe) communities. Over time, we added efforts to safeguard their interests, nurture leadership from within, and connect them with national life.”
He stressed the importance of reviving pride in local heroes, cultural roots, and tribal contributions to the freedom movement, adding that shakhas are steadily expanding even in remote forest and Northeastern regions.
In today’s fragmented and fast-paced world, the RSS shakha model offers a time-tested, people-centered approach to transformation. Rooted in daily discipline, shared ideals, and community belonging, it continues to shape not only character but also national unity — making it truly irreplaceable.
