Darbhanga. In yet another attack on Hindu festivals, a radical mob attacked a Hindu procession carrying a Saraswati murti for immersion in the Darbhanga district of Bihar while passing through the Kasai Mohalla (Butchers’ Colony) in Muria. They pelted stones, vandalized the area and Saraswati murti, and injured devotees. The Hindu procession was carried to mark the festival of Basant Panchami on 14th February.
Reports suggest that the devotees were carrying out an immersion procession of Saraswati murti in Tarasarai Muria Tola. But the radical mob started pelting stones at them while passing through Kasai Mohalla. Notably, it is a Muslim-dominated area. Following this, tensions escalated and the clash erupted.
The police reached the site as soon as it was reported. However, due to the large number of miscreants, they had to retreat and several police officers were also injured in this attack. Moreover, they also forcefully entered other houses, beat them, and stole money from them.
“In Muriya panchayat, a clash broke out between two communities during statue immersion… We had talks with both parties and the due work of the immersion has been completed… The clash began on from where to turn the idols on the road… There has been stone pelting… Some sheds of homes have been torn down… There have been minor injuries,” said Rajeev Raushan, Darbhanga DM.
As soon as the incident was reported, a large number of security forces were deployed in the area who reached there. The police controlled the situation and later facilitated idol immersion.
It should be noted that a similar attack was planned in Darbhanga on 22nd January when stones were pelted at the Shri Ram Shobha Yatra at the time.
