Jammu. After years of neglect, plans are underway to restore the famous Martand Surya Mandir in Kashmir. According to a notification issued by the Jammu and Kashmir government, efforts will be made to restore/preserve ancient temples in Kashmir, including the Surya Martand Mandir located in Anantnag district. Additionally, there are discussions about installing a statue of the ancient emperor Lalitaditya Muktapida in the Martand Mandir.
The Martand Surya Mandir, located in Anantnag, Kashmir, is an ancient Hindu Mandir dedicated to the Surya Bhagwan. It was built during the 8th century by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty. The Martand Surya Mandir was a prominent center of worship and pilgrimage in ancient times.
The Martand Surya Mandir is characterized by its unique blend of Kashmiri and Gandharan architectural styles. The mandir complex originally consisted of a central sanctuary surrounded by a colonnaded courtyard, with smaller shrines and pavilions located around it. The main sanctuary housed a massive stone platform upon which the idol of the Surya Bhagwan was likely enshrined.
Despite its once magnificent splendour, the Martand Surya Mandir fell into ruins over the centuries due to various factors, including invasions, natural disasters, and neglect. Today, only the ruins of the temple complex remain, but they continue to attract visitors from around the world who are drawn to its historical significance and architectural beauty.
The temple stands as a testament to Kashmir’s rich cultural and religious heritage, serving as a reminder of its glorious past.
