Pondicherry University has come under heavy protests from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) following the staging of a highly offensive play which mocked Ramayan.
The ABVP, in a statement, strongly condemned the insult to Ramayan in a play conducted during a cultural fest held in Pondicherry University on 29th March and demanded strong action against it. The play depicts Bhagwan Hanuman’s character in poor light and shows Goddess Sita offering beef to Ravana.
The allegedly offensive play was staged by the Department of Performing Arts during the fest – Ezhini 2K24.
ABVP demanded accountability from the administration of the Pondicherry University for permitting such communal plays on campus. The student organization also demanded the dismissal of the Head of the Department of Performing Arts, Dr. Sharvanan Velu.
Additionally, ABVP sought actions against the individuals involved in the play, including writer and director Pushparaj (MPA 1st yr), and Mithun Krishna and Sree Parvathy.
The student organization said that such actions, disguised as creative expression, disrespect religious sentiments and are intolerable. It also called for upholding respect for religious beliefs, and the swift condemnation of any form of hate speech or mockery.
