Assam orders speedy trial on Nandita’s murder case
Guwahati: Assam government has directed the police to investigate the murder case of a young college student in a speedy manner so that exemplary punishment can be ensured against the culprit. The cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of State chief minister Himanta
Biswa Sarma on Thursday, also expressed deep condolence on Nandita Saikia’s untimely demise. Nandita, a graduate student of Moridhal college in Dhemaji district, was attacked by one Rintu Sarma with a machete (Dao in Assamese) on 21 August in broad daylight near the college campus. Seriously wounded Nandita was first taken to Dhemaji civil hospital and later shifted to Dibrugarh for treatments, but the brilliant girl from Dhakuakhana locality succumbed to injuries on Wednesday. The accused, who is a lower-grade employee of the college, has been arrested immediately by the police which revealed that Sarma proposed the victim to marry, but she rejected. He was already suspended by the college authority, informed Dr Kamal Gogoi, principal of Dhemaji Moridhal college. By now the social media users have raised strongest voices against the murderer and demanded stringent punishments to him. All Assam Students Union (AASU) advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya termed the incident as barbaric and demanded the culprit to be booked for punishments in such a way that nobody ever dares to indulge in such crimes. The senior most student leader stated that people of Assam cannot accept such kind of incidents and the government must do its duty to ensure safety and security to the student community as well common public.
