Despite the society’s rule that no livestock would be allowed inside the society, a Muslim resident brought two goats allegedly for sacrificing on the occasion of upcoming festival of Eid-Al-Adha.
The incident took place on Monday (26 June) night at Vinay Nagar Society in JP North on Mira Road, Thane.Bakrid is falling on 29 June this year.The man has identified as Mohseen Sheikh.
Following the development, a huge protest erupted at a residential society in Mumbai after a Muslim resident.The residents of the society, gathered on the premises to protest against the goat brought by Mohseen Sheikh to his house. They demanded that the goat be taken out of the society and that no sacrifices be carried out on the premises.
A video of the incident went viral on social media platforms in which some people were seen shouting and preventing the man from taking the goat to his house.
This prompted a large number of Hindu residents to gather on thesociety premises in protest, allegedly chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’. They also, allegedly, recited the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’.
Following the incident, the police rushed to the housing society located in Bhayandar area on Tuesday evening. The Mira Road police intervened to settle the dispute and assured the society members that sacrifice would not take place on the society premises, as per rules. They held discussions with the residents and pacified them, a station house officer (SHO) at Mira Road police station told.
The police official said the man informs the police every year in advance about the procedure of bringing a goat to his house ahead of Bakrid as he has no other place to keep it.
“Our society had passed a rule that no livestock would be allowed inside the society, but they (some residents of the society) violated it and brought two goats inside. We are opposing it and will not allow it,” a society resident told.
Another resident said that Muslim families had been given a designated space for keeping the goats, but one out of several families observing the festival brought the goat inside the complex.
