The All India Muslim Personal Law Board called an emergency meeting late on Tuesday night, just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated in favour of Uniform Civil Code in the country. The Muslim law board’s meeting was held virtually.
The meeting continued for around three hours, according to media reports. Members of the law board who attended the meeting discussed several legal aspects of the UCC and notably in the context of Prime Minister’s remarks made in Bhopal.
Addressing a gathering of Bharatiya Janata Party workers in Bhopal on Tuesday, the Prime Minister claimed that two separate set of laws cannot work in the country. The Constitution of India talks about equal rights for all citizens in the country, he said. Even the Supreme Court has called for same laws being applicable on all Indian, the Prime Minister claimed.
During its meet, the AIMPLB decided to submit a draft proposal to the Law Commission after gathering opinions and views of lawyers and experts. This comes just as the Union Law Commission has started the process of consultation with stakeholders on Uniform Civil Code.
